Get lost! iPhone compass app struggles in tests

Before you start thinking about relying on the iPhone compass app for your next hiking trip, you might want to read the results of tests performed by TechHive. While some believe that the compass issues are limited to the new iPhone 5s and 5c, the tests showed that the problems go well beyond those two models.

The TechHive team used the Compass app in both iOS 6 and iOS 7 on a range of phones from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5s and 5c. All phones were re-calibrated several times, and the testers found that the results varied greatly regardless of location (inside or outside). The expensive phones were tested against a reliable and cheap -- US$15 -- Suunto A-10 compass.

Tests with an iPhone 5s showed a variation of 10 to 22 degrees, while a 5c showed more consistent results of 9 to 12 degrees off. The iPhone 4s showed an average of 14.5 degrees variation. TechHive found that the worst deviations came from the last years iPhone 5, with one phone showing anywhere from a 15 to 28 degree deviation.

By the way, TechHive took on the testing initially as a way of verifying Gizmodos claim that the iPhone 5s "level sensor" is out of whack. TechHive found that to work just fine, but noticed that the direction finding capability was horribly wrong.

It should be noted that the test results are associated with the Compass app, not the iPhones GPS capabilities. However, its worth considering the purchase of an inexpensive -- and much more accurate -- traditional magnetic compass if youre heading for the deep woods.

After on stage showing at iPhone 5s debut Nike Move app goes live

iPhone Screenshot 1iPhone Screenshot 3

When Apple took the wraps off the iPhone 5s in September, it showed off a new chip dubbed the M7 motion coprocessor, which digests data from the phones built-in sensors, by showcasing Nikes specially made Nike+ Move app. The title was made available for download on Monday.

According to Nike, the app harnesses data from the M7 chip to "capture your every move," turning the information into "Nike Fuel," a unit of measurement the company uses to track daily activity levels. Nike Fuel is used in a range of products, including the Nike FuelBand SE wearable fitness tracker.

From the release notes:
  • Nike+ Move offers insight into when you move, how you move and where you move - and lets you challenge your friends to see who moves more.
  • Win the day by beating your NikeFuel average and watch your goal ring change from Red to Green.
  • See when you are most active throughout the day and how youre doing compared to yesterday.
  • Move more often and win as many hours as you can throughout the day.
  • See how you moved through the day with a breakdown of running, walking, and other movement.
  • See where youre moving and where you move the most each day.
  • Check out how you compare against your Game Center friends or other Nike+ Move users near you.
Because the app takes advantage of the M7 motion coprocessor, compatibility is currently limited to the iPhone 5s.

A number of other developers have already tapped the M7s motion tracking prowess, as seen inAppleInsiders fitness app roundup, though Nikes app allows users to incorporate data generated by the iPhone 5s with other products in the expanding Nike+ ecosystem.

Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Lego Movie Videogame App Release Date

Lego Movie Videogame (iOS) Review: Fun activity amusement, however just on the off chance that youve seen the motion picture

Lego Movie Videogame App Release Date-The Lego Movie Videogame Videos ($4.99, £3.99, Au$6.49) for ios gives you a chance to partake in the endeavor to spare the world with an immense cast of characters from the film. You play at first as Emmet, Chris Pratts character from the film, however youll have the capacity to switch over to different characters when their remarkable aptitudes are required as you investigate all the ranges of the amusement.

LEGO Movie Videogame Xbox 360

Lego Movie Videogame Wii U

The most recent in a long line of Lego feature recreations for portable, The Lego Movie Videogame Codes has that exceptional Lego air that difficulties you to finish huge amounts of missions, however keeps the gameplay light and fun. One thing to note is that on the off chance that you havent seen the film, the diversion is still fun, yet as you travel through the motion pictures few distinctive planets, it wont bode well.

Pick your controls first

Id exhort beginning right off with control setup on the grounds that I could practically not play the amusement with the default control plan. The diversion defaults to a swipe framework that feels simply verging on excessively unique, however luckily you can go to the settings and switch it over to a gamepad-like interface. Whichever you utilize, the diversion is dependably somewhat hard to control. Simply realize that on the off chance that you dislike the controls, you can switch.

Beginning your undertaking

The Lego Movie Videogame takes after the films storyline and gives you a chance to participate in the significant scenes from Flatbush Gorge in the old west to Cloud Cuckoo Land. There are 45 levels in all and the diversion shows cutscenes from the motion picture so you know where you are in the activity. As you play, youll investigate levels to finish missions, each with difficulties that oblige you to switch characters to utilize their novel abilities.

As in other Lego amusements, the greater part of the view is destructable and provides for you Lego "studs" that can be utilized to purchase different characters from the film. There are likewise zones that oblige you to "assemble" protests, for example, steps and extensions to help you get up and go in the level. The trap here is that a few items must be assembled by particular characters so youll have to change to one that has that capacity before pressing the catch that constructs the article.

Each one level has objectives you have to finish with a specific end goal to pass the level. Frequently it means get-together pages of building guidelines to assemble a vehicle or discovering parts that construct an extension so you can escape.

A lot of mixture

While a large portion of the diversion is as Ive depicted in this way, there are different levels that provide for you new difficulties as you play. For instance, when twisting to diverse ranges, you get a top-down viewpoint as you tumble down a long tube while keeping away from hindrances. Different levels have you driving the monster cruiser from the motion picture or keeping an eye on a turret on the again of a vehicle so you can clear out seeking after police.

You ought to truly watch the motion picture

The amusement remains all alone for entertainment only component, however in the event that you havent seen the film, it wont bode well. I say this in light of the fact that, to be completely forthright, I hadnt seen the motion picture myself when I initially downloaded the amusement and I rapidly kicked lost when I off playing. Indeed with the intermittent cutscenes, the progressions from zone to territory are truly shaking on the off chance that you dont know why theyre going on. First and foremost I was in a city, and after that in the Old West, and when I was up in the mists (Cloud Cuckoo Land), I knew I would never comprehend what was going ahead without seeing the motion picture.

There are likewise puts where missions simply appear to end and its not clear what you did to complete the region. In the wake of seeing the film I comprehended that it was just pushing the plot forward, however in the event that youre playing without that information, it can be really befuddling.

WhatsApp iPhone App Confirms Voice Calling Feature Launch Imminent

whatsapp_iphone_voice_calling_635_153514_113518_6223.jpg

Voice calling, the one big feature missing from WhatsApps arsenal, is coming to the popular platform soon. Weve been hearing about this feature since February, when WhatsApp CEO Jan Kuom announced that the voice calling feature would be added to Android and iPhone first, followed by BlackBerry, Nokia and Microsoft platforms. Now, NDTV Gadgets has spotted a mention of the feature in WhatsApps iPhone app, which all but confirms that the feature is indeed nearing launch.

With the latest WhatsApp update that was released for iPhone on September 8, WhatsApp added several features such as improved location sharing and fast camera access. What the apps release notes do not mention is that it has added a pop-up, which requests access to the microphone every time the app is opened. As you can see in the screenshots above, this pop-up reads, "WhatsApp requires microphone access to send Voice Messages, record Videos with sound, make and receive Voice Calls."

This pop-up will appear only if users have not allowed WhatsApp access to the microphone. To see this, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone > WhatsApp > flip the slider to Off. Now open WhatsApp to find mention of the voice calling feature.

Previously, WhatsApps voice calling feature was seen in Hindi translation requests and later in leaked images of the user interface for voice calling. However, this is the first time that mention of this feature has been spotted in the app itself.

With over 600 million active users, WhatsApp is the worlds most popular messaging app. It was acquired by Facebook earlier this year, in a deal reportedly worth $19 billion.

How to earn money fast Build a Windows Phone app and get £60 000

Microsoft is looking to encourage developers to produce apps for its Windows Phone platform, paying out vast amounts of money to get devs on board.

With the Windows Phone ecosystem still struggling to gain a serious grip on the market, being dwarfed by iOS and Android, latest reports have claimed that Microsoft is giving developers up to $100,000 (£63,000) to get high-profile app developers to turn to the Windows platform.

Sadly, this isn’t everyone’s answer for how to make money fast. Microsoft is said to be saving the big bucks to target developers with a proven track record of crafting popular, profitable applications for rival platforms, namely those made by Apple and Google.

"My friends in Silicon Valley say Microsoft has been offering $100,000 or more to companies that will build Windows Phone apps,” a reporter for Bloomberg said in a recent article. They stressed that Microsoft has paid key name developers more than $100,000 to get them to develop for Windows Phone.

Although the Windows Phone platform now has more than 145,000 apps, it still lags a long way behind iOS and Android, both of which what are closing in on the 1 million apps milestone. What is more troubling for Microsoft, however, is the continuing lack of high-profile apps that are becoming something of a must have.

With Windows Phone still a system that is frequently overlooked by developers, earlier this year rival BlackBerry suggested that although it will be bringing its BBM system to iOS and Android in app form later this summer, Microsoft’s OS is still too small to be considered.

“When we look at critical masses and we look at other mobile platforms, iOS and Android at this point in time stand out to us,” Vivek Bhardwaj, Head of BlackBerry’s Software Portfolio, told us. “We are not excluding other platforms, it is just our focus needs to be on those that can get BBM to the masses and the data shows that iOS and Android make up the bulk of mobile users around the world.”

Gesture Beta App by Microsoft for Windows Phone Users

Microsoft on Monday launched the Gestures Beta app for Windows Phone, showcasing the companys advances in the particular field. The app is available only for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.

The app lets users answer calls, put incoming calls on silent and do more tasks via simple gestures. Gesture Beta, which is sized less than 1MB on the Windows Phone Store, will however have limited functionalities on Lumia 630, Lumia 635 and Lumia 530, says the firm.

With the help of Gestures Beta app, Windows Phone users can pick up the handset and place it on their ears to answer the call; mute the mic during a call by placing the handset on a flat surface with display down; put the call on speaker by keeping the smartphone on flat surface placing the display up, and silent the incoming call by flipping the handset on a flat surface with display down.

It was reported that Microsofts future flagship handset codenamed McLaren will feature gesture support which will let users navigate on the phone without touching the display, and will be released on a range of US carriers later this year.

Google Camera app brings Nexus photo fun to all Android 4 4 devices

The new Google Camera app finally brings features that were once only available on Nexus devices to every other Android snapper out there. Well, as long as those Android devices are running KitKat, that is.

Google camera app

Two of the apps biggest features are Photo Sphere and Lens Blur. If youre remotely familiar with the Nexus 5, or even the Nexus 4 that came before it, Photo Sphere is definitely not a new trick, but it was very limited in terms of who could use it.

Photo Sphere allows you to create panorama-like images with a 360-degree field of view. That means youre not limited to just panning straight across a scene, but you can move your phone camera up or down to include more of the sky and foreground.

The stitching job on the 360 panoramas is pretty good, or at least as good as it can be on a really difficult image to piece together. And youll be able to view them in full on your Android device or on Google+ if you want to share the photos.

Blurry like a DSLR

The next notable feature is Lens Blur, which is similar to what youll find on the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S5. Basically, you select your subject and everything else gets blurred out so the focus is mostly on your subject. Its like shooting with shallow depth-of-field on a DSLR.

These photo blurring effects sometimes work very well, and other times they seem very artificial. When its done right, the results can be dreamy and natural. On the other hand, if its a little overdone - like it is on the HTC One compared to the Galaxy S5 - it can look a little gimmicky.

However, if you use it sparingly and carefully, you can get pretty good results and really show your subject and get rid of all the clutter in your photo.

In the end, the Google Camera app is pretty simple, and the UI is designed to make taking photos easier. You can download it via the Play Store now if youre sporting a device with Android 4.4 KitKat. Enjoy!
