5 Mistakes We Did On Our Facebook Fan Page

5 Mistakes We Did On Our Facebook Fan Page

Lighthouse Insights has a Facebook fan page that is liked by 23 people. We dont have a million fans but in this small journey of building our community, we did few mistakes and we worked on it which has reaped us positive results. Results were not huge but its been a great learning curve since it is about engaging humans and even god will take time. What were the mistakes and how we rectified them, is what we want to share.

1. No Landing Page: Landing page is the welcome page for people who stumble upon your page. Its the door to your world and one would want the guest to not leave with bad taste. Initially we never had a landing page but we have it now.

LANDING PAGE OF HDFC

Though we dont have such amazing landing page but we are trying to be organic.
We made our own landing page from photoshop, uploaded on an image server and with bit of simple coding. Its not an interactive one but it has a clear message.

TIP: Landing page is a great way to attract so one should try this and dont forget to set the landing page settings as the default page. For more detailed insights to create an exciting landing page click here.

2. Same Display Picture: The display picture is your profile image and one should not keep it blank. We had a display picture but it was boring and was stagnant. Later on we thought of making the display picture theme specific. For e.g.: Last month it was the world cup fever in India and so we made the display picture corresponding to that event. Display picture can cover lot of ground on your page like this,
PROFILE PICTURE
so make sure to use it. We havent done it but depending on how would you like it to be.

TIP: Dont keep tiny pictures and try to change it after a while. It is a great way to show that you are changing, making the fan page beautiful and giving your fans more reasons to be proud of.

3. Wall was a Blog Roll: This was our biggest mistake and was pointed by one of our friend. He was irritated by the number of posts that were spamming his wall. He had the right to leave our page as our automated posting for our blog posts were bombarding his wall. We write daily on our blog and this led to a severe problem. First thing we did was that we removed automated posting by networkblogs. Second thing we made a section for blogs on our page and we linked that to our blog posts using networkblog app. Now we know more display our posts on the wall. So as a fan he is no more finding our stuff on his timeline but if he is interested then he can view the blog section. This small change also helped us not to be labeled as broadcasters of our work. Now the wall is more of content from others as we believe in Share to Grow.

TIP: Be frequent but dont spam the wall of your fans. Facebook is a social space for people and we need to respect that. Businesses should also avoid broadcasting about their services and products which will help fans to believe that the fan page is not built for sales pitching.

4. Less interaction: Dont be in your own world. Try to move and connect to other fan pages and make sure that you also connect to your interests. Initially we were not connecting to fan pages of bloggers, social media lovers etc but now we have broken that wall. We got new ideas and also some new faces to converse. Our intention was never to broadcast and spam someones wall but to contribute. This helped us and our rational inputs made us the weekly fan of Social Media Examiner.

ENGAGEMENT HAS ITS BENEFITS

TIP:
Dont connect for the heck of it, do it for the need and comment when it makes sense.

5. Random Content: Content is the life of your fan page. We kept on posting regular, new and varied contents but after a while we needed to make a decision as no one was responding to our content. We sat down and asked few questions; what are we, why we are here and why did our fan like us. For e.g.: Initially our content included all topics from news, movies, sports, etc. but our fans never came to our page for this. We think that she came to us because we are social media believers and we provide insights. So the content has to have the essence of social media. Since then we have streamlined our content and whatever link or posts we provide we make sure that its exciting, useful and in line with our objective.

TIP: Experiment but dont forget about your objective. Keep your content in sync with your objective.

We did mistakes; we learnt from them and we are doing few more but not repeating the old ones. Social media is all about experimenting and until you do it on your own you will never learn.
What were your mistakes so that we can learn and not repeat them?
